About Us
Quantum Computing Inc. (QCi) (Nasdaq: QUBT) is an innovative, integrated photonics company that provides accessible and affordable quantum machines to the world today. QCi products are designed to operate at room temperature and low power at an affordable cost. The Company’s portfolio of core technology and products offer unique capabilities in the areas of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, cyber security as well as remote sensing applications.
Scope of the Job
QCi is seeking a hands-on Application Engineer to deploy, integrate, test, and support QCi photonic and quantum computing hardware in laboratory and customer environments. The primary focus of this role is physical hardware implementation, including equipment assembly, rack integration, power and cabling, device connectivity, RF signal chains, instrumentation, system bring-up, and on-site troubleshooting.
You will prepare hardware and proof-of-concept demonstrations in the lab, partner with customers to confirm technical and site-readiness requirements, and travel to customer locations to install, commission, validate, and service QCi equipment. Software, networking, and scripting are supporting tools used to configure hardware, automate diagnostics, and complete successful deployments rather than the central focus of the role.
The successful candidate is a practical hardware problem-solver who is comfortable working with electronic, photonic, compute, serial, and RF equipment. This person can diagnose issues at the component, interface, subsystem, and installation levels while communicating clearly with customers and internal engineering teams. This position is based in Hoboken, NJ or may be performed remotely and requires up to 50% domestic and international travel.
Duties / Responsibilities
- Hardware Deployment and Integration
- Hardware Installation: Install, rack, cable, configure, commission, and support QCi photonic and quantum computing equipment at customer sites.
- System Bring-Up: Perform initial power-on, hardware verification, interface checks, calibration, and functional testing of integrated equipment.
- Site Readiness: Support site surveys and define requirements for rack space, power, grounding, cooling, network connectivity, security, environmental conditions, and safe equipment access.
- Compute Hardware: Build, image, configure, and service desktop, server, and embedded compute platforms that support QCi devices and control applications.
- Hardware Interfaces: Bring up and troubleshoot physical and low-level interfaces, including RS-232/422/485, USB, I2C, SPI, Ethernet, connectors, adapters, and cabling.
- RF Signal Chains: Assemble, calibrate, test, and troubleshoot digital and analog RF signal chains using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, power meters, and related laboratory equipment.
- Component-Level Troubleshooting: Diagnose hardware failures involving power, thermal performance, signal integrity, cabling, connectors, firmware, device communication, and subsystem interactions.
- Acceptance Testing: Execute on-site and remote hardware acceptance testing, document results, resolve deficiencies, and support customer sign-off.
- Laboratory Testing and Demonstration
- Testbed Development: Design, assemble, and characterize hardware testbeds and proof-of-concept demonstrations that reflect customer operating environments.
- Hardware Characterization: Measure and document equipment performance, reliability, interfaces, and operating limits against technical requirements.
- Prototype Integration: Partner with Engineering and Product teams to integrate new hardware, identify design or usability issues, and improve deployment readiness.
- Technical Documentation: Develop hardware installation guides, wiring and cabling documentation, configuration records, test procedures, runbooks, and field-service materials.
- Demonstrations: Prepare and operate QCi hardware for customer demonstrations, technical evaluations, and internal validation activities.
- Customer Support and Product Improvement
- Field Troubleshooting: Serve as a technical escalation point for deployed hardware and diagnose equipment, interface, RF, serial, compute, and connectivity issues on-site or remotely.
- Training and Handoff: Deliver hands-on customer training covering equipment operation, routine checks, basic troubleshooting, and safe system use.
- Cross-Functional Partnership: Work closely with Hardware Engineering, Product, and customer technical teams to resolve implementation issues and improve product reliability and serviceability.
- Field Feedback: Document hardware defects, recurring failure modes, installation challenges, and enhancement requests to support corrective actions and future product improvements.
- Customer Relationships: Represent QCi professionally and build trusted relationships with customer engineers, laboratory personnel, facilities teams, IT and security teams, and technical leadership.
Required Skills & Experience
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related technical discipline. Equivalent military or industry field-engineering experience will be considered.
Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience installing, integrating, testing, servicing, or supporting advanced hardware in customer, laboratory, manufacturing, or field environments.
Hardware Integration: Demonstrated ability to assemble, configure, and service technical equipment and compute hardware, including components, cabling, connectors, power, grounding, BIOS/firmware, storage, RAID, and thermal considerations.
Electronic Test Equipment: Hands-on experience using oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, power meters, and other diagnostic equipment to isolate hardware and signal issues.
RF Fundamentals: Working knowledge of digital and analog RF concepts, signal chains, impedance, attenuation, timing, synchronization, connectors, cabling, and standard RF test methods.
Serial and Device Communications: Experience with RS-232/422/485, USB, I2C, and SPI, including cabling, adapters, terminal tools, signal verification, and protocol troubleshooting.
Hardware Troubleshooting: Ability to isolate failures across components, interfaces, power, thermal conditions, firmware, drivers, and integrated subsystems.
Compute and Operating Systems: Working knowledge of Linux, preferred, and Windows sufficient to configure hardware, drivers, services, storage, logging, and diagnostic tools.
Networking: Practical knowledge of TCP/IP and Ethernet sufficient to connect equipment, verify communications, analyze packet captures, and troubleshoot customer-site connectivity. Experience with Wireshark or tcpdump is preferred.
Scripting: Working knowledge of bash, Python, or comparable scripting for hardware configuration, automated testing, logging, and diagnostics.
Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain hardware requirements clearly, document test results, and remain composed during customer-site troubleshooting.
Autonomy: A self-directed, resourceful approach with the ability to manage field installations independently while collaborating closely with internal engineering teams.
Travel: Ability to travel up to 50% domestically and internationally, with a valid driver’s license and passport.
Additional Preferred Skills
- Experience with photonic or quantum computing hardware, lasers, optoelectronics, optical sensing, optical benches, high-performance computing equipment, or quantum compute platforms.
- Experience in field engineering, hardware applications engineering, equipment installation, commissioning, laboratory integration, or customer-site service for complex technical products.
- Experience reading and working from schematics, wiring diagrams, interface-control documents, equipment specifications, and test procedures.
- Experience working with customer facilities, laboratory, IT, and security teams to prepare sites and obtain approval for equipment installation and connectivity.
Work Environment
Comfort working across office, laboratory, and active customer-site environments.
Ability to lift, move, rack, connect, and service equipment while following applicable safety requirements.
Comfort working around electronic, optical, RF, and compute equipment and using standard laboratory and field-service tools.
