Technical Manager, Cloud Computing Engineering

Marysville, WA +1 In person Full-time

Location: Marysville, OH

Here at ScottsMiracle-Gro there is no such thing as a typical day. Our culture is constantly energized by new and exciting growth opportunities and at a rapid pace. Below are details on an open job. If the role interests you and you would like to be considered we encourage you to apply!

Job Profile Summary

As the Technical Manager of Cloud Computing Engineering, you will be the senior hands-on technical leader for Scotts Miracle-Gro’s cloud infrastructure. Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is our primary platform, with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a key secondary platform. You will lead our Kubernetes and container strategy — including Amazon EKS and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) — and drive infrastructure-as-code and automation practices using GitHub.

This is a technical leadership role with no direct reports. You will set technical direction, lead cloud projects, and mentor engineers across the Infrastructure team, reporting to the Director, Infrastructure Operations & Services.

In this role you will

GCP Engineering & Operations: Design, build, and operate our GCP environment — Compute Engine, GKE, VPC networking, Cloud IAM, Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL, and Cloud Logging/Monitoring — and serve as the top escalation point for GCP issues.

Kubernetes & Containers: Design, deploy, and support containerized workloads on Amazon EKS and GKE, including cluster architecture, upgrades, networking, autoscaling, RBAC, container registries, and Helm-based deployments.

AWS & Multi-Cloud: Engineer and support AWS infrastructure (EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, EKS) and the connectivity between AWS, GCP, and our on-premises environment.

Infrastructure as Code & CI/CD: Build and maintain Terraform and automation in GitHub and other code repositories; set branching and code-review standards and build CI/CD pipelines.

Security & Compliance: Implement cloud security best practices — least-privilege IAM, network segmentation, encryption, secrets management, and image scanning — in partnership with Information Security.

Technical Leadership: Lead cloud projects from design through delivery, mentor engineers, run design and code reviews, and write architecture standards and runbooks.

Cost Optimization: Monitor and optimize GCP and AWS spend through rightsizing, commitments, and tagging standards.

Vendor Engagement & Reporting: Work with Google Cloud, AWS, and partner engineers, evaluate new services and tools, and report on project status, risks, and recommendations to IOS leadership.

What you’ll need to be successful

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 6–10 years of infrastructure or cloud engineering experience, including 3+ years of hands-on GCP engineering.
  • Deep hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (Compute Engine, GKE, VPC networking, Cloud IAM, Cloud Storage, Cloud Logging/Monitoring).
  • 2+ years building and operating production Kubernetes clusters, ideally Amazon EKS and GKE.
  • Strong experience with Docker or similar container tooling, container registries, and Helm.
  • Working experience with core AWS services (EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, EKS).
  • Daily use of Git with GitHub and/or other code repositories (GitLab, Bitbucket).
  • Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, preferably Terraform.
  • Solid understanding of cloud networking and identity/access management.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain technical designs and trade-offs to engineers and leadership.
