POSITION TITLE:Intern-Research, Student (Non-Paid)
POSITION SUMMARY
This internship provides hands-on experience in computational neuroscience and bioinformatics within a collaborative academic research laboratory at Scripps Research. The intern will support the analysis of single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) and related genomic datasets to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying alcohol and drug abuse; neuroHIV; and neurological and psychiatric disorders.
The intern will receive training in data quality control, cell-type identification, differential gene expression, pathway analysis, and gene regulatory network analysis. Depending on the project, the intern may use algorithms such as ARACNe3 and NaRnEA to investigate regulatory networks and identify potential therapeutic targets. Through this experience, the intern will develop practical skills in programming, statistical analysis, scientific visualization, and the broader research processes.
Previous undergraduate interns and research assistants in our laboratory have received rigorous training in scientific research, contributed to peer-reviewed publications, and subsequently been admitted to competitive PhD and MD programs at leading institutions, including UCLA, UC Davis, Stanford, and others. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students interested in neuroscience, bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, biomedical sciences, or related fields to gain meaningful research experience and prepare for future graduate or professional training.
Some experience with R or Python is helpful; prior experience with these specialized algorithms is not required.
Temporary: Up to 40 hours per week.
