About the role
At Sydney Airport, we connect the world — and you make that possible. As part of our Finance team, you’ll help shape the future of air travel through precision, collaboration, and technical expertise.
We are seeking a Senior Financial Accountant to join our Financial Control team in a permanent, full-time role. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting professional to take ownership of complex accounting areas, particularly those related to treasury activities, while also contributing to broader financial reporting responsibilities across the business.
Reporting to the Finance Manager, this role plays a key part in ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of month-end and statutory reporting deliverables. You’ll be hands-on in preparing and reviewing accounting entries, reconciliations, and financial statement notes, while working closely with stakeholders across Finance and the broader business. The role suits someone who enjoys working through complex accounting matters, takes ownership of their deliverables and plans ahead to achieve high-quality outcomes.
In this role, you will
- Lead and perform month-end close activities for assigned portfolios and entities, including preparing and posting complex journals, and performing detailed balance sheet reconciliations.
- Prepare technical financial statement notes and supporting schedules for quarterly, half-year, and year-end financial reporting.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders and external auditors to coordinate deliverables, resolve queries, and provide supporting documentation.
- Research and apply relevant Australian accounting standards to your work, keeping up to date with the latest developments.
- Review work prepared by junior team members and provide clear technical guidance, coaching and constructive feedback.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve processes, controls and reporting efficiency, proactively leveraging automation and AI-enabled tools to enhance productivity, insight and accuracy.
About you
- You are a technically capable and hands-on accounting professional who enjoys taking ownership of complex work. You are comfortable operating in a dynamic environment and take pride in delivering accurate, well-supported work within reporting deadlines.
- 5+ years’ experience in financial accounting or external audit, with practical, hands-on experience preparing journals, reconciliations, and financial reporting deliverables.
- Strong knowledge of Australian accounting standards and the ability to apply technical requirements in practice.
- Experience with treasury accounting or financial instruments including debt, derivatives or hedge accounting, would be highly advantageous.
- CA or CPA qualified (essential).
- Advanced Excel and ERP system experience (Oracle or similar).
- Analytical and detail-oriented, with the ability to work independently and apply professional judgement.
- Effective communication and stakeholder management skills.
- A proactive and organised approach, with the ability to anticipate dependencies and coordinate inputs before reporting deadlines.
