Sr. Software Engineer, Object Storage, Tesla Cloud Platform

Palo Alto, CA In person Full-time

Tesla Cloud Platform (TCP) is Tesla's own cloud that powers virtual machine, metal, storage, and networking at global scale across multiple datacenters. As a Senior Software Engineer focused on Object Storage, you will own and build the control plane for TCP's Bucket as a Service, enabling Tesla engineers to create, manage, and operate S3-compatible object storage at scale across Tesla's on-premise infrastructure. This is not a managed storage vendor integration.

You will build the control plane that abstracts multi-vendor object storage backends into a unified, self-service experience through TCP's portal and APIs. You will collaborate closely with compute, networking, identity, and infrastructure teams to deliver a storage service that meets the reliability and scale requirements of Tesla's mission-critical workloads. Own and develop the Bucket as a Service control plane, including bucket lifecycle management, access policies, and quota enforcement Design and build S3-compatible APIs and abstractions that provide a consistent interface across multiple object storage backends Implement multi-tenant bucket isolation, ensuring strict separation of storage resources between organizational units and projects Build access control integration with TCP's IAM layer, including bucket-level and object-level permissions, service account access, and policy enforcement Develop storage quota management across project, tenant, and zone dimensions, with usage tracking and reporting Build full-stack features using Go, gRPC, PostgreSQL, and React/Next.js for bucket creation, management dashboards, and administrative tooling Design and implement background jobs and reconciliation loops for state synchronization between TCP and the underlying storage backends Own the API layer (REST/gRPC) for all object storage endpoints, ensuring reliability and backward compatibility Collaborate with networking, identity, DNS, and infrastructure teams to deliver integrated storage provisioning workflows Participate in the global on-call rotation for production storage services 5+ years of professional experience in backend development with Go (Golang), including distributed systems and API development Experience building or operating object storage systems (MinIO, Ceph RGW, NetApp StorageGRID, or similar S3-compatible platforms) Experience with PostgreSQL including schema design, migrations, and query optimization Strong understanding of the S3 API specification and object storage semantics (buckets, objects, ACLs, lifecycle policies, versioning) Experience with gRPC or similar RPC frameworks Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts: state synchronization, concurrency, eventual consistency, and data durability guarantees Experience with React, Next.js, and TypeScript for building production interfaces is a plus Benefits Along with competitive pay, as a full-time Tesla employee, you are eligible for the following benefits at day 1 of hire: Medical plans > plan options with $0 payroll deduction Family-building, fertility, adoption and surrogacy benefits Dental (including orthodontic coverage) and vision plans, both have options with a $0 paycheck contribution Company Paid (Health Savings Accounts) HSA Contribution when enrolled in the High-Deductible medical plan with HSA Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) 401(k) with employer match, Employee Stock Purchase Plans, and other financial benefits Company paid Basic Life, AD&D Short-term and long-term disability insurance (90 day waiting period) Employee Assistance Program Sick and Vacation time (Flex time for salary positions, Accrued hours for Hourly positions), and Paid Holidays Back-up childcare and parenting support resources Voluntary benefits to include: critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident insurance, theft & legal services, and pet insurance Weight Loss and Tobacco Cessation Programs Tesla Babies program Commuter benefits Employee discounts and perks program Expected Compensation $168,000 - $252,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
