Tesla Manufacturing

Sr. Process Controls Engineer

Austin, TX In person Full-time

Imagine a world where infinite clean energy isn’t just a promise, but a reality. To make that happen, Tesla is building a comprehensive network of chemical refining and advanced manufacturing facilities that will form the supply chain for the next era of North American solar and battery manufacturing. To achieve that objective, Tesla's Process Controls and Optimization organization is growing our Capital Projects team to design, build, commission, and ramp up these new facilities.

As a Manufacturing Controls Dev Engineer, you will own one or more process units from start to finish, from blank design to full production. You will learn the process, assess hazards, develop control strategies, design automation architecture, program control logic, commission equipment, and ramp the plant to full capacity. You will work alongside a team of talented and ambitious engineers in a fast-paced environment to make a world of amazing abundance a reality.

Lead the design, implementation, and commissioning of fully automated control strategies for process equipment and machinery in your assigned areas Review P&IDs and equipment design packages, and propose robust control strategies that maximize availability, quality, and yield Take ownership of the control system’s role in HAZOP and LOPA, evaluate process hazards and machine safety, design risk mitigation strategies (alarms, permissives, interlocks), and validate your safety logic during commissioning Design and deploy advanced automation architecture by breaking your area into a network of equipment modules that coordinate together to execute sequential control and failure response strategies with minimal operator intervention Design HMI graphics that match your automation architecture and control strategy, and train operators to run your units through your graphics Design a tailored and compact set of interface signals between your packaged equipment and the rest of the plant so that your equipment is seamlessly integrated into your area controls architecture Lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) for your equipment.

Define the FAT and SAT plans, validate as-built documentation and performance, diagnose and fix problems with equipment, instrumentation, control strategy design, and programming Integrate your area control logic with Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Plant Information Management System (PIMS) to enable real-time data acquisition, material tracking, and enterprise-level production optimization Degree in Electrical, Chemical, or Control Systems Engineering or equivalent experience1-5 years designing, programming, and troubleshooting industrial control systems in a production environment, either in DCS (Emerson, Honeywell, or equivalent) or PLC (Siemens, Beckhoff, or equivalent) Strong fundamental understanding of at least one type of process equipment (reactors, mixers, distillation towers, boilers, etc.) or one type of discrete manufacturing equipment (conveyors, robots, LTUs, AGVs, ASRSs, etc.), and ability to explain the design decisions behind that equipment’s control strategy Ability to explain controls concepts to your process, mechanical, and operations counterparts, and collaborate with them to create robust designs Traveling up to 50% of the time for vendor reviews, factory acceptance tests, and site commissioning
