Software Engineer, Test Automation & Quality, Tesla App

Palo Alto, CA In person Full-time

The Tesla App is how millions of owners understand and control their Solar, Powerwall, Wall Connector, and vehicles—and it ships every two weeks across iPhone, iPad, Android phones, and foldables. This fall we brought the app to iPad and to foldable phones, and we learned exactly where quality comes from: real devices, real hardware, every locale, every text size, and someone who refuses to let a clipped toggle or a mirrored arrow reach our users.

We're looking for a Software Engineer to build the system that does that continuously. You'll build a dynamic testing platform that exercises the Tesla App against real Powerwall, Wall Connector, Supercharger, and Tesla vehicle test setups—from daily builds down to individual pull requests—so app and firmware changes get caught where they meet, not in the field. And we want you to go further than test. You'll build automation that finds trivial app bugs and carries them unattended from discovery to documentation, root cause, and a pull request a developer can merge—while knowing when an issue is real, and handing it to a human with the evidence to act on it.

We believe that tightening the feedback loop between what we ship and what owners experience is the best way to improve quality. You'll work alongside the app engineers and designers who build the Tesla App, and closely with integration engineers across Tesla's firmware and software organizations—the teams who own the hardware-in-the-loop and software-in-the-loop setups your platform drives. Build and own a dynamic testing platform for the Tesla App on iOS and Android, running from nightly builds to per-PR checks, and integrate it with partner teams' HIL and SIL setups for Powerwall, Wall Connector, Supercharger, and Tesla vehicles Build autonomous bug-fixing automation that takes trivial app bugs from discovery through documentation, root cause, and a code request—with the judgment to escalate real issues to engineers, and the guardrails to run safely on devices connected to live energy systems Author SI skills and agent workflows that make testing precise and consistent—reproducible runs, verifiable evidence, and low token cost, scripting what can be scripted and spending model reasoning only where judgment is needed Use source and product knowledge to aim your testing: read the diff, the ticket's test plan, and the firmware at the same revision, and spend coverage where change and risk actually are Orchestrate and maintain our test device lab—iPhones, iPads, Android phones and foldables, simulators and emulators—keeping it provisioned, reliable unattended, and able to drive the app into any locale, text size, orientation, fold posture, or multitasking window on demand Make accessibility and layout measurable: Dynamic Type and font scale up to the largest accessibility sizes, VoiceOver and TalkBack, right-to-left and long-text locales, region independent of language, tablet and foldable layouts—catching clipped, hidden, and truncated UI before customers do Own release validation on real hardware: prove the build under test is the build we ship, validate tickets against their test plans, and produce clear, reviewable evidence for release sign-off Automate marketing and store screenshots and video across devices and locales, straight from the app, and help keep our App Store and Google Play submissions compliant Investigate field-reported issues across in-app logs, Splunk, Sentry, and device telemetry, and use real usage data to decide which devices, sizes, and settings deserve coverage Partner with integration engineers in the firmware and software organizations, and with app engineering, design, and product, to define test strategy and quality gates—and leave every process faster and simpler than you found it 3+ years building test and quality automation for mobile apps on iOS and Android, ideally running a dynamic testing program for a frequently releasing app Hands-on experience with Appium and XCUITest, and a track record of making UI automation reliable enough to trust unattended Proficiency in Python and TypeScript, and experience with React or React Native Experience deploying services to Kubernetes and building CI/CD in GitHub Actions Experience orchestrating and maintaining fleets of physical test devices and simulators (simctl/devicectl, adb, and friends) Experience using SI agents to drive automated testing in your day-to-day work, including authoring the skills and tools that make their runs repeatable and efficient—with the skepticism to verify what they report and the discipline to own what ships An eye for design and accessibility: you notice the 2px clip, the label that truncates at the largest text size, the icon that should have mirrored in Arabic Nice to have: experience testing apps against connected hardware (IoT, BLE or Wi-Fi commissioning, HIL/SIL test setups); App Store and Google Play submission and fastlane; renewable energy or EV charging Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience Passion for Tesla's mission of accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy Benefits Along with competitive pay, as a full-time Tesla employee, you are eligible for the following benefits at day 1 of hire: Medical plans > plan options with $0 payroll deduction Family-building, fertility, adoption and surrogacy benefits Dental (including orthodontic coverage) and vision plans, both have options with a $0 paycheck contribution Company Paid (Health Savings Accounts) HSA Contribution when enrolled in the High-Deductible medical plan with HSA Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) 401(k) with employer match, Employee Stock Purchase Plans, and other financial benefits Company paid Basic Life, AD&D Short-term and long-term disability insurance (90 day waiting period) Employee Assistance Program Sick and Vacation time (Flex time for salary positions, Accrued hours for Hourly positions), and Paid Holidays Back-up childcare and parenting support resources Voluntary benefits to include: critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident insurance, theft & legal services, and pet insurance Weight Loss and Tobacco Cessation Programs Tesla Babies program Commuter benefits Employee discounts and perks program Earned Wage Access: Real-time pay access paid daily, subject to eligibility and schedule (applicable for below Sr.
