Remote Full-time

Optum Tech is a global leader in health care innovation. Our teams develop cutting-edge solutions that help people live healthier lives and help make the health system work better for everyone. From advanced data analytics and AI to cybersecurity, we use innovative approaches to solve some of health care's most complex challenges. Your contributions here have the potential to change lives. As a Principal Quality Engineer within the Optum Enterprise Imaging team, you will serve as the senior technical quality leader for Enterprise Imaging integration and solution-level testing. Enterprise Imaging is a complex clinical solution where a study moves across EMRs, PACS, gateways, cloud archives, and partner platforms such as SI PACS 3.0. In this hands-on, highly strategic role, you will set the integration test strategy, establish automation standards, lead cross-organizational vendor and partner quality engagements, and mentor quality engineers.

By leveraging clinical workflow expertise and healthcare data standards, you will validate data across product boundaries and deliver evidence-based quality insights that directly safeguard clinical outcomes and patient care.

If you are located in Toronto, ON, you will have the flexibility to work remotely* as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities

Own, evolve, and execute the integration and end-to-end quality strategy across on-premise and cloud Enterprise Imaging deployments

Define and uphold technical integration test standards, test environment expectations, and evidence traceability across product boundaries and partner platforms

Act as the technical quality lead and escalation point for complex, cross-product issues, guiding and mentoring engineers in test automation, API testing, and root-cause analysis

Lead quality engagements with third-party vendors and external partners (e.g., Synthesis Health), defining test scope, entry/exit criteria, evidence expectations, and defect triage processes

Design and execute end-to-end clinical workflow test scenarios validating HL7 (e.g., ORM/ORU), DICOM, DICOMweb, and REST APIs across multi-platform web, desktop, and cloud environments

Build and maintain scalable UI and API test automation frameworks using modern tools (e.g., Playwright) integrated into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions) as quality gates

Interpret performance and non-functional test results (response times, throughput, resource usage) to communicate risks and collaborate with engineering on acceptance criteria

Lead verification and validation (V&V) activities and maintain regulatory traceability matrices aligned with Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs (QARA) standards

Use enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline workflows, automate tasks, accelerate test data generation, and drive continuous quality engineering innovation

You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in software testing and quality engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in the healthcare industry with solid clinical workflow knowledge (e.g., radiology, cardiology, or imaging informatics)
  • 3+ years in a lead, principal, or technical leadership capacity guiding other engineers
  • 3+ years of experience working with healthcare interoperability standards, including HL7 and DICOM protocols
  • 3+ years of hands-on test automation experience with modern frameworks (Playwright preferred, or Selenium, Cypress, Appium) using JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, or C#
  • 3+ years of hands-on API testing experience working with REST APIs, Swagger/OpenAPI specifications, and tools like Postman or code-based API test suites
  • Demonstrated experience leading quality engagements, test evidence reviews, and joint defect triage across organizational boundaries with external vendors or partners
  • Demonstrated experience using Git-based workflows, CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions), and defect/test management platforms (e.g., Jira, TestRail).
  • Proven track record of communicating technical risks and influencing cross-functional product, engineering, and leadership stakeholders without direct authority

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Health Informatics, or 4+ years of equivalent quality engineering experience

ISTQB or equivalent quality engineering certifications

Experience with PACS, Enterprise Imaging, or medical imaging software deployment, integration, or clinical site operations

Experience in regulated medical device/software environments (V&V, design controls, IEC 62304, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, PHI handling)

Experience with performance testing tools (e.g., JMeter, k6, Gatling, LoadRunner) and non-functional metric evaluation

Experience with cloud platforms (GCP preferred) and de-identified healthcare test data management practices

Practical experience incorporating enterprise-approved AI tools into day-to-day quality engineering workflows

At UnitedHealth Group, our mission is to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone. We believe everyone-of every race, gender, sexuality, age, location and income-deserves the opportunity to live their healthiest life. Today, however, there are still far too many barriers to good health which are disproportionately experienced by people of color, historically marginalized groups and those with lower incomes. We are committed to mitigating our impact on the environment and enabling and delivering equitable care that addresses health disparities and improves health outcomes - an enterprise priority reflected in our mission.
