Sr Manager Tax

Raleigh, NC Hybrid Full-time

Location: Raleigh, NC

The Sr. Tax Manager will play a critical role in the Company’s income tax provision (ASC 740) process, U.S. federal and state income tax compliance, and international tax reporting, while supporting SOX 404 internal control requirements for a publicly traded company. This role requires a well-rounded tax professional with public accounting (Big 4) training, meaningful public-company income tax experience, and the technical depth to work independently across provision, compliance, and international tax matters in a small-cap environment where the tax department is lean and each team member owns significant scope.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical income tax, tax accounting, ASC 740, and SOX 404 internal control skills with the ability to discuss issues with tax leadership and outside advisors, communicate effectively with cross-functional and executive stakeholders, and make meaningful contributions to improve processes and controls as the Company grows and develops.

What You’ll Contribute

Income Tax Provision (ASC 740)

Prepare and/or review the Company’s quarterly and annual income tax provision, including current and deferred tax calculations, effective tax rate analysis, and rate reconciliation under ASU 2023-09 along with documentation and evidentiary support.

Manage the valuation allowance analysis and documentation supporting realizability of deferred tax assets.

Prepare and maintain documentation for uncertain tax positions (ASC 740-10 / FIN 48), including technical memos supporting return positions.

Prepare the income tax footnote and related disclosures for the Company’s 10-K and 10-Q filings, including the tax rate reconciliation, deferred tax asset/liability rollforward, and other required disclosures (including disclosures required under ASU 2023-09).

Coordinate with external auditors on quarterly reviews and the annual audit of the income tax provision, including preparation of audit support and responses to audit inquiries.

SOX / Internal Controls

  • Own and maintain SOX 404 process narratives, control matrices, and control documentation for income tax processes, including the provision, compliance, and account reconciliation controls.
  • Perform and document control activities (preparer/reviewer sign-offs, account reconciliations, supporting evidence) in accordance with the Company’s internal control framework.
  • Partner with internal audit and external auditors on SOX walkthroughs and testing, and remediate any identified control deficiencies.
  • Identify and implement process and control improvements to strengthen the tax department’s control environment as the Company scales.
  • Federal and State Income Tax Compliance
  • Manage preparation and timely filing of the U.S. federal consolidated income tax return and all state and local income tax returns, whether prepared in-house or by outside providers.
  • Review and/or prepare state tax apportionment calculations, including analysis of state nexus, apportionment methodology, and combined/unitary versus separate-company filing positions.
  • Manage estimated tax payments and extensions for federal and state jurisdictions, and monitor filing deadlines across all jurisdictions.
  • Where compliance is outsourced, manage the relationship with outside tax preparers, including scoping, data delivery, review of draft returns, and reconciliation of return positions to the tax provision.
  • Research and document the R&D tax credit (federal and applicable state credits), including coordination of credit studies and support for claimed credits.

International Tax

  • Prepare and/or review the tax accounting and compliance impacts of the Company’s international operations, including GILTI, Subpart F, FDII, and BEAT calculations, whether prepared in-house or by outside providers.
  • Compute and analyze foreign tax credits, including tracking of foreign tax pools and applicable limitations.
  • Monitor and assess the Company’s exposure under the OECD Pillar Two global minimum tax framework, including data-gathering, modeling, and disclosure considerations as rules are enacted in relevant jurisdictions.
  • Coordinate with outside advisors on transfer pricing documentation, intercompany agreements, and related compliance (e.g., Forms 5471/8858), and review the resulting tax accounting impacts.
  • Tax Research, Technology, and Process
  • Research and document federal and state income tax technical issues, drafting clear, well-supported technical memoranda for the tax file.
  • Utilize tax research platforms (e.g., RIA Checkpoint, Bloomberg Tax/BNA, CCH) and OneSource Tax Provision (OTP) software and other tax compliance software (e.g., Corptax, or similar) to support provision, compliance, and research workflows.
  • Apply data analytics tools (e.g., Excel, Alteryx, Power BI) and, where appropriate, generative AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude, or similar) to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and documentation of tax research, provision, and compliance processes.
  • Identify opportunities to automate and streamline recurring tax processes and support the ongoing evaluation and implementation of tax technology.
  • Cross-Functional and Leadership
  • Participate with the Tax team in Partnering with Accounting, FP&A, Treasury, Legal, and other business partners on the tax implications of transactions, new business initiatives, and financing or entity structuring.
  • Support tax due diligence and integration matters for mergers, acquisitions, or dispositions, as needed.
  • Supervise, train, and develop tax staff and/or associates, and manage the work of outside service providers to ensure quality and timeliness of deliverables.
  • Manage and respond to federal and state tax audits and notices, including preparing responses and supporting documentation, and managing outside counsel or advisors as needed.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities in a lean-staffed environment.
  • Comfortable operating in a hands-on capacity — this role involves both technical review and direct preparation/execution work, typical of a tax department at a small-cap public company.
  • High degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and personal accountability given the department’s limited redundancy.
  • Sound understanding of U.S. GAAP financial reporting as it relates to income taxes.
