Engineering @ BiblioCommons
BiblioCommons offers an opportunity to work in an environment that combines the challenges and complexity of a large-scale, data-intensive application with the creativity and fun of a sophisticated consumer web offering, central to the daily web interactions of millions of users.
We’re a highly collaborative team that applies innovative solutions to challenging problems. We believe strongly in automation and invest heavily in it. We’re also committed to doing things right and always looking for ways to do them better. Today, that means building an AI-first software development lifecycle, where engineers use agentic coding tools like Claude Code to plan, build, test, and review changes across our platform.
We are hiring two Junior Full-Stack Engineers for 16-month PEY internships to maintain and build elegant, high-performance web experiences that help millions of users discover more physical and digital content. You will work across the full stack, primarily through Claude Code: directing an AI agent to explore our codebase, write and refactor code, generate tests, and investigate issues, while you own the thinking, the judgment, and the quality of everything that ships.
By AI-native, we mean someone for whom working with AI agents is already the natural way to build software, and who understands the code well enough to own it. We care less about how fast you can prompt and more about how well you can direct, verify, and improve what an agent produces.
You will enjoy and be successful in this role if you are:
Great at debugging and not afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
Accountable and take ownership of your work, including every line of code an AI agent writes on your behalf.
Supportive and enjoy working as part of a team.
Passionate about self-improvement, growth, and tackling new challenges.
Reliable and consistent in the effort you bring.
Never content with the status quo. You are always looking to automate, improve processes, and follow best practices.
AI-native: AI agents are already your default way to learn, build, and solve problems, not an occasional experiment.
Healthily skeptical: you verify AI output instead of trusting it, and you can tell when an agent is confidently wrong.
How you will make an impact
- Enhance and maintain our platform applications, front end and back end, that serve millions of users, using Claude Code as your primary development tool.
- Turn tickets into clear specs and plans before implementation, and use them to guide the agent through well-scoped, reviewable changes.
- Debug and perform root cause analysis on integration issues, using AI to trace code paths, read logs, and test hypotheses quickly.
- Review, test, and refine AI-generated code so that what you ship is clean, robust, performant, and secure.
- Maintain quality as a priority by writing meaningful tests and validating them yourself.
- Improve developer productivity by refactoring key areas of the Core UI codebase.
- Contribute to our shared AI tooling, such as Claude Code custom commands, skills, and project context files, so the whole team gets faster.
- Work across multiple frameworks and programming languages, using AI to ramp up quickly on unfamiliar parts of a large, mature codebase.
- Communicate effectively to flag challenges or blockers to deliver on time.
What will you bring to the team
- Hands-on experience building software with AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or similar) through coursework, personal projects, hackathons, or previous internships.
- Ability to break a problem into clear, well-scoped instructions and give an agent the context it needs to succeed.
- Solid fundamentals in data structures and algorithms. You need to understand the code to judge it.
- Knowledge of JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3.
- Some knowledge of RESTful APIs and how web applications fit together, from browser to database.
- Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills.
- Excellent communication skills and collaboration across teams.
- Passion and motivation to learn new technologies.
- Interest in building highly responsive consumer web application interfaces at scale.
Bonus Points for
- React, Ruby, and Rails knowledge.
- Previous programming experience in any object-oriented language.
- Experience customizing AI coding workflows, such as custom commands, skills, subagents, hooks, or MCP server integrations.
- A portfolio, GitHub repo, or short write-up showing something you built with an AI agent and what you learned about working with one.
- Knowledge of cloud-native applications.
- Basic computer networking knowledge (connectivity issues, LANs, firewalls, etc.).
