Graduate Apprentice Trainee - Customs & Trade Compliance

Bengaluru, India In person Full-time

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

About the NATS Program

This role is offered under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS), a flagship initiative of the Government of India designed to equip Indian youth with practical, trade-specific skills. Administered under the provisions of the Apprentices Act, 1961 (amended in 1973), this program at Volvo Group offers engineering graduates and diploma holders a structured, 1-year practical, hands-on On-the-Job Training (OJT) opportunity to build industry-ready capabilities.

Mission of the role

Support the Customs & Trade India team in improving compliance, reducing risk and making import-export processes simpler, faster and more data driven. This role is designed for a high-potential graduate who combines curiosity with practical judgment, communicates confidently, takes ownership and follows actions through to closure.

What you will do

  • Support customs compliance controls, including document checks, broker follow-up, internal controls, post-entry review and closure of identified gaps.
  • Maintain customs and trade data, trackers, records and supporting evidence with strong attention to accuracy and deadlines.
  • Assist with HS classification research, origin documentation, customs valuation inputs, notifications, licences and trade-policy monitoring under guidance from the team.
  • Support matters relating to duty-relief and trade schemes such as bonded operations, EPCG, duty drawback, bank guarantees, preferential trade agreements and other applicable regimes.
  • Coordinate with Customs Brokers, logistics service providers, suppliers and internal teams to obtain facts, resolve documentation gaps and move actions forward.
  • Support customs audits, assessments, queries and case files by organising evidence, preparing working papers and tracking open points.
  • Identify delays, rework and waste in customs processes; propose simple, practical improvements and help implement approved actions.
  • Use Excel, Power BI, workflow tools or basic automation to improve visibility, controls and productivity. Prior coding experience is helpful but not mandatory.
  • Create clear presentations, process notes and digital learning material for internal customs and trade awareness.
  • Learn continuously, ask thoughtful questions, escalate risks early and own assigned deliverables from start to finish
  • Exposure areas
  • HS tariff classification and product understanding
  • Preferential trade agreements, origin and trade-policy measures
  • Bonded facilities, CKD operations and customs concessions
  • Customs valuation, notifications and regulatory documentation
  • Import-export process improvement, lead-time and cost optimisation
  • Customs broker governance, audits and compliance controls
  • Digitalisation, data quality, dashboards and automation

Who you are

  • You may be early in your career, but you are not passive. You are resourceful, comfortable working through ambiguity and willing to take the first responsible step rather than wait for perfect instructions.
  • Graduate in International Business, Supply Chain / Logistics, Law, Business Administration, Economics, Commerce, Customs or a related discipline.
  • Custom & Trade Compliance knowledge is a plus.
  • Relevant internships, academic projects, case competitions, volunteering or student leadership will be considered positively.
  • Strong critical thinking: separates facts from assumptions, tests information and reaches practical, evidence-based conclusions.
  • Ownership mindset: commits to outcomes, follows up consistently, keeps stakeholders informed and closes the loop.
  • Action orientation: converts discussion into clear next steps and moves work forward with appropriate urgency.
  • High learning agility: quickly understands unfamiliar regulations, systems, products and processes; applies feedback without repeated prompting.
  • Clear communication: can write concise emails, explain a problem logically and speak confidently with colleagues and external partners.
  • Comfort with numbers and data, with working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. Exposure to Power BI, Python, SQL or automation is an advantage.
  • Good organisation and attention to detail, particularly when handling documents, deadlines and compliance evidence.
  • Collaborative and respectful, while being willing to question constructively, raise risks and ask for clarity.
  • What success looks like in the first year
  • Learns core customs processes and reliably completes assigned compliance activities with improving independence.
  • Maintains accurate trackers and documentation, with timely follow-up and visible closure of actions.
  • Builds trusted working relationships with brokers, logistics, purchasing, finance, legal, operations and other stakeholders.
  • Contributes at least one practical process, data-quality, training or digital improvement that is adopted by the team.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment by escalating material risks early and taking ownership of routine issues through resolution.
