About LASMNY
For nearly 75 years, the Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York (LASMNY) has provided free civil legal assistance to people who cannot afford an attorney. Our mission is to expand access to the essentials of life through high-quality, compassionate legal advocacy and education.
Because legal problems rarely occur in isolation, we take a holistic approach that addresses the interconnected challenges affecting housing, income, benefits, health, and family stability. By working across practice areas and partnering with community organizations, we help clients achieve lasting solutions that extend beyond a single legal matter.
Through offices in Utica, Syracuse, Binghamton, Oswego, Oneonta, and Watertown, LASMNY serves residents of thirteen counties across Central New York. Our Agricultural Worker Project also provides legal services to farmworkers throughout New York State.
Job Summary
LASMNY is seeking an experienced domestic relations attorney to serve as Supervising Attorney for our work with survivors of intimate partner violence. This is an opportunity to lead and mentor a dedicated team while helping survivors and their children achieve safety, stability, and independence.
The Supervising Attorney oversees matrimonial and family law representation for survivors, including divorce, custody and visitation, child support, and related civil matters. Survivors of intimate partner violence make up nearly a quarter of the clients LASMNY serves, and this position helps ensure they receive skilled, trauma-informed advocacy.
Survivors often face several connected problems at once, including housing instability, loss of income or public benefits, and debt created through economic abuse. The Supervising Attorney leads a holistic approach that looks beyond the family law matter, working with LASMNY's other practice areas and with domestic violence service providers to address the full range of needs that affect a survivor’s safety and long-term stability.
The Supervising Attorney supervises and evaluates attorneys and staff, carries a caseload, and ensures compliance with Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations, grant requirements, and LASMNY policies. This is one position, which may be based in either our Utica or Syracuse office.
Essential Job Duties
- Supervise attorneys and support staff representing survivors of intimate partner violence in orders of protection, divorce, custody and visitation, child support, and related civil matters.

- Develop and maintain partnerships with domestic violence service providers, human services agencies, community organizations, the courts, and the private bar to strengthen referrals and coordinated services.
- Oversee program administration, including grant reporting, compliance, timekeeping, file maintenance, case management, and accurate recordkeeping.
