AWS Lambda is a serverless compute service that lets customers run code without provisioning or managing servers. As part of the AWS Lambda team, you'll work on one of the fastest-growing services in AWS, processing trillions of invocations monthly for millions of customers worldwide. We're seeking an experienced Software Development Engineer to join our team working on AWS Lambda's Runtimes. The Runtimes team holds a unique position within Lambda, owning implementation, documentation, security updates, and supporting libraries that define how developers write and run code across multiple languages in Lambda.
Unlike teams owning discrete services, Runtimes owns software with an extraordinarily large surface area spanning runtime versions across seven languages (Python, NodeJS, Java, .NET, Ruby, Go, Rust), each with its own dependencies, behaviors, and integration patterns with the Lambda platform and broader serverless ecosystem. This is a customer-visible and developer-scrutinized area in Lambda. In this role, you will bring versatile expertise across multiple programming languages and a nuanced understanding of how customers experience Lambda through its programming models.
You will actively engage with upstream open-source communities, ensuring Runtimes align with evolving language advancements. You will simplify Runtime operations for efficiency and scalability, balancing security patching urgency against customer disruption risk. This role offers the opportunity to solve complex challenges at scale and deliver a best-in-class serverless customer experience. Key job responsibilities - Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of Lambda runtime components across multiple programming languages, ensuring high quality, extensibility, and performance at scale - Collaborate with upstream open-source communities to align Lambda Runtimes with evolving language standards and contribute back improvements that benefit the broader developer ecosystem - Own the architectural direction for runtime software, making well-reasoned trade-offs between security patching urgency, customer impact, and long-term maintainability - Mentor and coach engineers on the team, driving adoption of engineering best practices and raising the technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing - Design and implement testing, deployment, and operational strategies that ensure runtime reliability across millions of customer workloads A day in the life You'll start your day reviewing the latest upstream language releases and assessing their impact on Lambda Runtimes.
You might then pair with a teammate to design a new integration pattern for an upcoming language feature, followed by writing and reviewing code across multiple repositories. Afternoons often include syncs with partner teams working on the broader Lambda platform, where you'll align on API contracts and deployment timelines. You'll also dedicate time to mentoring engineers, reviewing technical designs, and improving operational runbooks.
About the team The AWS Lambda Runtimes team is responsible for how developers write and run code on one of the most widely adopted serverless platforms in the world. We own a uniquely broad surface area spanning seven programming languages and their supporting libraries, documentation, and tooling. Our team values inclusion, continuous learning, and collaboration. We work closely with Lambda platform teams, language community maintainers, and AWS service teams to deliver a reliable and performant experience for millions of customers.
If you're excited about open-source engagement, multi-language engineering challenges, and shaping how developers build on serverless, this is the team for you. - Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team - Experience leading the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems - Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design - Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent - Experience with full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations Amazon is an equal opportunities employer.
