Hundreds of millions of customers. Billions of queries per year and dollars in revenue. The scale and impact of Amazon search is HUGE and we need smart and creative leaders to imagine and develop innovative cross-device features to realize the future of product search worldwide. Our mission is to enable AI driven innovation to successfully experiment and launch new features on the search page while maintaining Amazon customer trust.
We work to ensure experimentation is conducted safely and maintains a high customer bar. Anything that reaches customers is relevant, highly available, fast, and defect free. Our efforts increase trust, transparency, speed, and autonomy for and among builders working in Search. Your job is to set the technical direction for that work, hire and grow the people who do it, and be accountable for its delivery, quality, and operational health.
You'll lead a team of engineers through complex technical challenges, making pragmatic decisions that balance speed of delivery against long-term technical health. This includes driving adoption of the latest GenAI coding tools to accelerate your team's velocity while holding Amazon's high standards for code quality and security. You'll partner with product managers to shape the roadmap and refine requirements, with design to ensure high-fidelity customer experiences, and with peer engineering teams to align on scalable architectures that handle Amazon-scale traffic.
You own the tradeoffs between scope, timeline, and resourcing, and you make the call when priorities compete. A significant portion of your time goes to people and technical leadership: coaching and developing engineers, managing performance, recruiting, and steering the team through design and architecture reviews rather than owning every design yourself. You're accountable for your team's services end-to-end — from design through deployment and operational excellence — ensuring they meet stringent performance, security, and reliability bars, and that on-call and operational load stay sustainable.
As the Manager of the team, you'll set the team's technical strategy, raise the engineering bar through the standards you enforce and the reviews you lead, and represent your team's work and commitments to senior leadership and cross-org stakeholders. - 3+ years of engineering team management experience - 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience - 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience - 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience - Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations - Experience partnering with product or program management teams - Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy - Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.
