At AWS, resilience is a promise to our customers: that their workloads keep running even when part of the cloud doesn't. The Resilience Infrastructure and Solutions (RIS) organization makes good on that promise, driving higher availability for AWS customers through fewer and shorter operational events. We build the services and programs that detect, mitigate, and recover from failures, from a single impaired Availability Zone to a full Region.
When something goes wrong at cloud scale, our systems are what move customer traffic out of harm's way, often in under a minute, before most people notice anything happened. You'll join a team of software engineers, product and program managers, and resilience specialists who work across AWS to raise the bar on availability. You'll partner with foundational services that depend on us as their default mitigation path, and you'll help customers protect workloads they can't afford to have go down.
And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion. The Incident Mitigation team is looking for an experienced software engineer excited about building large-scale distributed systems that protect hundreds of thousands of customer resources across every AWS Region. You'll own the design and development of significant components of our mission-critical control and data planes, where correctness, speed, and scale are non-negotiable, since the moment they're needed most is during an active event.
The work spans cross-service integrations with ELB, S3, EKS, DynamoDB, EC2, and other foundational services, and demands strong judgment in fault-tolerant and distributed systems design. In this hands-on role you'll do everything from building rock-solid components to anticipating failure modes in design reviews to mentoring other engineers. You need to be not only a strong software developer with a track record of delivering, but someone who excels in communication, technical leadership, and customer focus.
You'll help shape the technology and the direction of a growing, high-impact space inside AWS, writing high-quality code that measurably improves availability for every AWS customer. Key job responsibilities - Lead the end-to-end design, implementation, and delivery of software systems spanning multiple features across the full development lifecycle, ensuring solutions are well-architected, extensible, and maintainable. - Own your team's architectural direction by evaluating trade-offs across scalability, performance, security, and maintainability, and guide future technology choices that align with business goals. - Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, technical program managers, and partner engineering teams to define requirements, align on system design, and deliver integrated solutions. - Coach and mentor engineers on your team and across related teams, driving adoption of engineering best practices and raising the quality bar for code organization, clarity, and documentation. - Identify opportunities to simplify existing systems and reduce technical debt, leveraging generative AI tools and industry innovations where appropriate to improve team productivity and solution quality.
A day in the life You will start your day reviewing design documents and code reviews, providing guidance that helps your teammates ship high-quality software. You might then dive into a complex system design challenge, weighing trade-offs with partner teams before writing code for a critical component. Afternoons could include mentoring a fellow engineer, prototyping a new approach using generative AI tools, or leading a discussion on operational improvements.
Your work will balance hands-on coding with architectural leadership, giving you the chance to shape both the technical direction and the culture of your team. About the team Our team is focused on building software that customers rely on every day. We value collaboration, pragmatism, and a commitment to quality that shows up in everything we build. You will work alongside talented engineers who are eager to learn from each other and solve meaningful problems together.
We are investing in new capabilities and looking for someone who will help define our technical roadmap for the years ahead. If you are excited about working in an inclusive environment where your ideas shape the future of our products, we would love to hear from you. - 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience - 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience - 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience - Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team - 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience - Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent Amazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.
