Role Overview and Responsibilities

Introduction

The Master Scheduler is responsible for developing, maintaining, and communicating the site master production schedule within a high-mix Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) environment. This position translates customer demand, material availability, production capacity, and business priorities into an executable manufacturing plan.

The Master Scheduler serves as the primary point of coordination between Planning, Procurement, Operations, Program Management, Customer Service, and Supply Chain to ensure production priorities are clearly understood and aligned with customer commitments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the master production schedule across SMT, through-hole, selective solder, inspection/test, box build, and other applicable manufacturing operations.
  • Translate customer orders, forecasts, backlog, and contractual delivery requirements into an executable site-level production plan.
  • Integrate customer requirements, material availability, capacity, manufacturing constraints, and business priorities into the production schedule and clearly communicate resulting priorities across the organization.
  • Balance competing customer priorities while minimizing unnecessary schedule disruption and excessive work-in-process.
  • Maintain visibility to planned versus actual production performance and adjust schedules based on changing conditions.
  • Maintain clear visibility to past-due orders, schedule changes, material constraints, and recovery plans.
  • Establish and maintain scheduling standards, planning horizons, frozen periods, and schedule-change disciplines.
  • Support inventory optimization by aligning production releases with actual material requirements and customer demand.
  • Drive continuous improvement in planning, scheduling, ERP utilization, and production-control processes.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and make sound scheduling decisions in a fast-changing manufacturing environment.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Serve as the primary point of coordination between Commercial, Engineering, Procurement, Planning, Production, Quality, and Finance to ensure launch activities are completed on schedule, including:
  • Coordinate with Material Planning and Procurement to understand component availability, shortages, recovery dates, and their impact on the production schedule.
  • Coordinate production sequencing across shared equipment, labor, tooling, test equipment, and other constrained resources.
  • Work closely with Operations leadership to evaluate capacity requirements, overtime needs, bottlenecks, and resource constraints.
  • Identify schedule risks and constraints early and drive cross-functional actions to protect customer delivery commitments.
  • Partner with Program Managers and Customer Service to provide accurate production forecast in support of customer delivery commitments.
  • Facilitate regular scheduling and production-priority meetings with appropriate cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Identify schedule risks and constraints early and drive cross-functional actions to protect customer delivery commitments.
  • Participate in Sales & Operations Planning (SIOP), backlog reviews, customer-focused team meetings, and other operational planning processes as required.

Critical Success Factors

The successful Master Scheduler creates one credible and executable version of the production plan. The role requires more than maintaining dates in an ERP system; it requires understanding how material availability, capacity, production dependencies, and customer priorities interact and proactively resolving conflicts before they affect delivery.

The Master Scheduler must be comfortable challenging unrealistic dates and driving the cross-functional alignment necessary to establish priorities, resolve constraints, and protect customer commitments.
