About the role
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Own the technical direction, architecture, and quality of a product area or set of services, translating product and business strategy into technical roadmaps and tactical objectives
- Lead the design of complex, distributed, fault-tolerant systems on the BEAM, including process and supervision architecture, clustering, and inter-service communication
- Be accountable, through the team, for delivering tactical business targets, identifying risks and dependencies early and adjusting plans to protect outcomes
- Partner with product managers, UX designers, data engineers, and clinical and operational leaders to shape requirements, evaluate tradeoffs, and define scope that delivers incremental value
- Lead technical design reviews, write architecture decision records, and ensure designs meet requirements for scalability, security, performance, and maintainability
- Lead complex integrations with EHR, payer, and partner platforms, ensuring data integrity and compliance with HL7/FHIR standards and HIPAA requirements
- Lead the implementation of testing strategies, and promote and conduct performance and load testing where appropriate
- Drive improvements to CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability, and release practices that increase deployment frequency and reduce lead time and change failure rate
- Lead response to complex production incidents, drive root cause analysis, and ensure systemic fixes are delivered
- Identify and pay down technical debt strategically, balancing modernization with delivery commitments
- Mentor engineers on complex projects, in estimating their work, and in following the Agile process
- Establish team patterns for effective, secure, and responsible AI-assisted development, including review expectations for AI-generated code
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for business partners and external stakeholders in the product area, explaining technical constraints, options, and impact in clear, non-technical terms
- Contribute to hiring by interviewing candidates and helping define the bar for engineering talent
EDUCATION

- 5+ years of experience building and operating production systems in Elixir and/or Erlang/OTP
- Demonstrated experience designing distributed, highly available systems and leading them from concept through production
- Experience leading complex integrations in a regulated environment; healthcare experience (EHR, payer, or clinical systems) strongly preferred
- Experience improving engineering practices such as CI/CD, observability, and automated testing across a team
KNOWLEDGE
- Expert knowledge of Elixir, Erlang/OTP, and the BEAM, including scheduling, memory and garbage collection, process design, and distributed Erlang
- Expert knowledge of Phoenix, LiveView, Ecto, and PostgreSQL, including performance tuning at scale, and the broader Elixir ecosystem (e.g., Oban, Broadway, Telemetry)
- Strong knowledge of software architecture patterns including event-driven architecture, domain-driven design, API design, and service decomposition
- Strong knowledge of cloud-native infrastructure on AWS and/or Azure, including containers, Kubernetes, and infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform)
- Strong knowledge of application security, identity and access management (OAuth 2.0/OpenID Connect), and HIPAA security requirements
