Meta Technology/Software

Director, Security Engineering - i3E

Washington, DC +3 In person Full-time

Are you interested in solving complex problems that lead to safer experiences for people using Meta’s products? Do you have an adversarial mindset and are excited about leading the pods that investigate and disrupt the most serious threats to our community? Come join us at Meta!

Meta is seeking an experienced security engineering leader to lead the Integrity Investigations, Intelligence, and Events organization (i3E). i3E protects the people who use Meta’s products from the worst-of-the-worst threat actors that cause real-world harm. The organization investigates complex adversarial behavior, scales investigative insight into durable defenses, and works across product, engineering, policy, legal, and public affairs to deter that activity. The range of threats is vast: fraud and scams, human exploitation and youth safety, dangerous organizations, nation-state threats, compromise, and the emerging abuse of generative AI; while the impact of this work is substantial.

In this role you will lead an organization of security engineer and security analyst investigators operating as a set of pods, each grouped under a manager and a technical lead, spanning several distinct harm domains. You will own the strategy for how Meta investigates adversarial threats at scale: what we investigate, how we convert investigative findings into enforcement and product defenses, and how we measure whether the work is reducing harm. You will be accountable for the capability and resilience of the organization — including growing the leadership bench and developing the next generation of investigative experts.

We are looking for a leader who is credible with investigators and engineers alike, who can set direction in a domain where the adversary adapts continuously, and who is deliberate about building an organization that outlasts any individual. This person will be a thought leader on investigative practice at Meta, will influence cross-functional roadmaps and strategic investments well beyond their own teams, and will be a driving force in making investigative work AI-native by redesigning how investigations are done rather than adding tools to existing workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Provide organizational leadership to a multi-pod investigations organization spanning several harm domains; set and communicate a vision that connects investigative work to measurable reduction in harm.
  • Own the strategy and roadmap for investigations across the organization, and ensure prioritization, resourcing, and delivery against it in a continuously changing threat and business environment.
  • Develop and scale the management and technical-leadership bench by hiring, coaching and growing managers and leads, building succession depth so that critical scope is never dependent on a single person.
  • Continue driving the organization’s AI-native transformation: redesign investigative workflows around AI capability, set the bar for responsible use, and hold the organization accountable for measurable gains in investigative throughput and quality.
  • Define and own the metrics and operating cadence for the organization; ensure leaders are measuring the right things and that team health is tracked alongside output.
  • Partner with and influence cross-functional leaders across product, engineering, data science, policy, legal, communications, and public affairs to turn investigative findings into enforcement, product change, and external communication.
  • Represent i3E and its work to senior leadership and as needed to external stakeholders; advocate for the organization’s priorities on partner roadmaps.
  • Lead the organization’s response posture for high-severity, time-compressed escalations.
  • Actively engage as a member of the leadership team on cross-cutting strategic, operational, and people initiatives.
  • Handling exposure to graphic and/or objectionable content including but not limited to graphic images, videos and writings, offensive or derogatory language, and other potential objectionable material, i.e. child exploitation, graphic violence, self-injury, animal abuse, and other content which may be considered offensive or disturbing.

Minimum qualifications

  • 12+ years of experience in security, intelligence, investigations, or a closely related technical domain, including hands-on technical depth
  • 8+ years of people management experience, including managing and developing managers, and leading distributed teams across sites and time zones
  • Demonstrated track record of attracting talent and of scaling and developing high-performing teams and leaders
  • Strategic thinker with a track record of transforming both how an organization works and what it delivers
  • Experience making data-driven decisions, and bringing clarity to problems that are ambiguous and where established principles do not fully apply
  • Experience collaborating with and influencing cross-functional leaders in engineering, product, policy, legal, and public affairs
  • Experience developing multi-source, evidence-based findings and communicating them to senior and executive audiences

Preferred qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize and redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g. efficiency gains, quality improvements)
  • Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g. risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
  • Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g. prompt and context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
  • Knowledge of or experience across several of: fraud and financial threats, human exploitation, youth safety, terrorist and hate organizations, transnational criminal organizations, state-sponsored threat actors, influence operations, account compromise, or GenAI abuse
  • Experience building or leading intelligence or investigative capabilities, including tradecraft development and investigative tooling
  • Experience in crisis management or incident response environments
  • Experience working with diverse communities and global teams
  • MS or equivalent experience in a technical discipline, intelligence studies, or a related field
