Microsoft Technology/Software

Software Engineer - Frontend

Hyderabad, India In person Full-time

Overview

Search is how people find their work. Every day, people in organizations of every size rely on it to locate the document they edited last week, the email that captured a decision, the colleague who knows the answer, or the meeting where it was all discussed. When search works, it disappears into the flow of work; when it does not, it costs time, focus and confidence.

In Microsoft 365 Copilot, we are reimagining search with AI. Copilot Search understands what you mean, brings together email, files, chats, meetings and people, and composes a grounded answer with sources you can trust, right alongside the results you need to go deeper. We are looking for a Software Engineer II excited to build this experience at global scale.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and ship Copilot Search features end to end in React and TypeScript, from design review and implementation through experimentation and worldwide rollout.
  • Build performant, accessible and localized user interfaces that work consistently across web, desktop and mobile hosts, as well as SharePoint and OneDrive.
  • Drive web performance through server-side rendering, hydration and rendering optimization, early data fetching, service workers and bundle-size reduction, with a focus on end-to-end latency and time to first answer.
  • Integrate AI-generated answers into the search experience, including streaming responses, citations and source attribution, and graceful handling of partial or failed responses.
  • Instrument features with telemetry, define success metrics, and run A/B experiments and staged rollouts to make data-driven product decisions.
  • Own the reliability of the features you build, including monitoring, alerting, automated health checks and diagnosis of client issues such as authentication and host-loading failures.
  • Participate in the team's on-call rotation, mitigating production incidents quickly and driving root-cause fixes so they do not recur.
  • Partner closely with product managers, designers and backend search and relevance engineers to turn ambiguous ideas into polished, shippable experiences.
  • Raise the engineering bar through thoughtful code reviews, automated testing and contributions to shared components and engineering practices.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools and LLM-based techniques, such as automated analysis of user feedback and quality evaluation, to move faster and improve product quality.

Required/Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.

OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Solid experience building production web applications with React and TypeScript.
  • Solid web fundamentals: HTML, CSS, browser rendering, web performance and server-side rendering.
  • Experience building and operating large-scale web applications used by a broad customer base.
  • Experience with telemetry, A/B experimentation and data-driven decision making.
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards and building inclusive user interfaces.
  • Experience building LLM or AI-powered product features, such as streaming experiences.
  • Exposure to mobile or cross-platform hosts, such as web experiences embedded in apps.
  • Experience with live-site operations, monitoring and on-call responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with search or information retrieval concepts is a plus.
  • Solid problem-solving and communication skills, and comfort collaborating across time zones.
