Founded in the Queensland outback in 1920, Qantas has grown to be Australia’s largest regional, domestic, and international airline. Qantas has a range of subsidiary businesses that support the overall operations of the Group. The Qantas Group’s main business is the transportation of customers and freight using two complementary airline brands — Qantas and Jetstar — operating regional, domestic, and international services.
Play a key role in driving technology transformation across our People, Communications and Medical platforms, delivering AI-enabled solutions that enhance employee experience.
Lead delivery of scalable, resilient and compliant solutions while balancing quick wins and long-term strategy.
Permanent, full-time opportunity located at the Qantas Head Office campus in Mascot.
At Qantas, we’re committed to creating an environment where our people can thrive. We take pride in solving complex challenges together, supporting each other, and delivering safe and reliable operations for our customers. You’ll be part of a team that values initiative, collaboration and continuous improvement.
The Technical Product Owner – People, Communications and Medical is a customer-centric leader responsible for partnering with senior stakeholders and technology teams to define strategy and deliver modern, digitally enabled solutions across the portfolio. You’ll work closely with the People, Communications and Medical teams, alongside Digital and Technology, to optimise Qantas’ enterprise platform landscape. The role blends product strategy, delivery management, vendor and commercial oversight, and risk and compliance accountability, with stakeholder management the single biggest call on your time.
Our Technical Product Owner portfolios are grouped to balance workload and capability across the team, so the platforms in this portfolio may flex over time as priorities shift, and you’ll need to be comfortable picking up new domains.
In this role, you’ll set the product direction for a portfolio of SaaS and commercial off-the-shelf platforms, shaping the roadmap with architects and vendor partners, prioritising enhancements and driving continuous improvement. Most of these platforms are vendor-built rather than developed in house, so the work centres on configuration, release and upgrade cycles, integration into the enterprise landscape, adopting the AI capability our vendors are releasing, and making sure we get genuine value from every subscription.
The portfolio also includes a handful of smaller in-house applications, including low-code forms and workflow apps, where you’ll guide build and support decisions directly.
You’ll deliver primarily through others: stakeholders, architects, vendors and delivery squads outside your direct control. You’ll also lead a product analyst, lifting capability and a service delivery mindset across everyone you work with. You’ll shape new initiatives from discovery through to business case, oversee delivery teams and partners on larger pieces of work, and run smaller projects yourself. You’ll own service quality and operational stability day to day, including operational resilience, cyber security and data privacy obligations across sensitive employee and medical information.
You will have
Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills. This is the largest single part of the role. You’ll engage constantly with leaders across the corporate functions, from Executive Manager level (two levels from the Group CEO) down, as well as business partners in Finance, Procurement, Cyber, Privacy and Risk. You’ll design and facilitate workshops that deliver clear, actionable outcomes.
Experience developing and delivering product strategy and roadmaps for enterprise SaaS or COTS platforms, plus smaller in-house and low-code applications, working with architects, vendors and business stakeholders to form the roadmap, including where new AI capability in these products can be adopted, then prioritising and sequencing change to meet business outcomes and demonstrate value for money.
A strong track record in risk, compliance and resilience: proactive risk management, control and vulnerability oversight, operational resilience, cyber security and data privacy obligations, ideally on platforms holding sensitive employee, health or medical information, plus incident, problem and change management, service quality and continuous service improvement across a major platform estate.
Project delivery experience across the lifecycle: shaping new initiatives from discovery through to business case, overseeing delivery teams and partners on larger pieces of work, and hands-on management of smaller project delivery.
Substantial experience managing both product vendors and service providers: working with Procurement on contract and licence negotiation, budget and financial oversight, contractual governance, renewal and investment decisions, and holding partners to their service level commitments, underpinned by strong commercial acumen.
Significant technology experience in large enterprise environments (typically 8+ years), including around 5 years owning or managing enterprise platforms, plus experience working in Agile and hybrid delivery environments. Airline or other complex operational environments are an advantage.
Proven ability to deliver through influence rather than direct authority. Most outcomes here come from aligning stakeholders, architects, vendors and delivery squads you don’t control. You’ll lead and develop a product analyst and mentor the vendor and delivery teams you work with, but the leadership that matters most is lateral and upward.
