We are looking for a Failure Analysis Engineer, Electrical, to join the failure analysis team in Berlin (Tesla Engineering Germany). This is an individual contributor role. You report to the mechanical failure analysis lead. The team finds root cause and contributing factors, so Tesla can reduce field, production, and development issues. You work with design, manufacturing, quality, and other engineering teams, across vehicle and energy products, including current models and products still in development.
We need an electrical engineer with industry experience, not a new graduate, to identify and characterize electrical failures. You use a multimeter, an oscilloscope, and other basic electrical test equipment to confirm the symptom, isolate the fault, and support root cause with Design, Manufacturing, and Quality. The right person is comfortable on the bench: probing boards, reading a schematic well enough to troubleshoot, and explaining what they found.
Manufacturing experience is a strong plus. That includes production test, yield, process, or factory debug. Debug and troubleshoot analog and digital systems with a digital multimeter, oscilloscope, power supply, and related bench equipment. Confirm and recreate failures seen in engineering, production, and the field. Drive root cause from the first report toward a countermeasure, with the original design engineers and the other failure analysis engineers.
Use the analytical tools the case needs, including functional test, electrical debug, and X-ray. Design experiments to test a theory, and run them yourself or with the technician. Document findings and investigation status. Report root cause and the relevant facts to engineering and manufacturing. Bring prior failure experience into design reviews and DFMEAs. Partner with manufacturing on production and yield-related electrical issues that come into the lab.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience. 1-3 years of industry experience in electrical debug, test, manufacturing, or a related hands-on role. This is not a new-graduate role. Internships and coursework alone are not enough. Hands-on use of a digital multimeter and an oscilloscope, and experience with power supplies and other common electrical test equipment.
Able to read a schematic and troubleshoot analog and digital circuitry at a basic to intermediate level. Strong written and spoken English. Self-driven, structured, and comfortable in a fast-paced lab. Preferred: experience with common failure analysis techniques. Preferred: manufacturing experience (production test, yield debug, process engineering, or factory electrical troubleshooting). Preferred: soldering and rework on PCBAs.
Preferred: familiarity with common digital protocols (I2C, CAN, LIN).
