Uber Transportation

Staff Software Engineer, Core Services ProdEng

San Francisco, CA In person Full-time

About the Role

Engineering at Uber means building for real-world impact under real-world constraints. The problems are complex, the systems are massive, and the pace is fast. You'll need to make smart decisions with imperfect information and own them. If you think in systems, thrive in ambiguous, high-stakes environments, and care about building things that actually work, this is where you'll grow.

Core Services Production Engineering is a software engineering team, not a traditional operations or systems administration team. We solve reliability problems by writing code—building chaos testing tools, traffic engineering and dependency safety frameworks, automation tools, and observability primitives.

As a Production Engineer, you will blend multiple domains of software engineering to ensure Uber's services run reliably at massive scale, while improving compute efficiency and accelerating developer productivity across a platform that serves millions of users around the world.

Our main focus areas include

Chaos testing tools and applications

Dependency safety frameworks and tooling

Observability and alerting platforms

Graceful degradation

If you've worked in an SRE, Production Engineering, or Reliability Engineering role with a strong software engineering focus—or are energized by solving complex engineering challenges and building tools that empower an entire engineering organization—you belong on this team.

What You'll Do

Design, build, and maintain software that improves the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of thousands of stateless and stateful production services distributed across multiple data center zones and regions.

Lead engineering initiatives end-to-end within the team, across the Production Engineering organization, and throughout Uber Engineering to improve reliability through automation, engineering standards, developer tooling, and reusable frameworks.

Work closely with engineers to understand their services and guide them toward practical, reliable architectures and implementations.

Apply SRE principles such as observability, integration testing, load testing, chaos testing, on-call practices, incident management, failovers, and disaster recovery to improve mean time between failures (MTBF), time to detection (TTD), and time to mitigation (TTM).

Participate in on-call rotations, respond to and lead the mitigation of production incidents, and drive post-incident improvements to prevent recurring issues.

  • Experience delivering engineering solutions end-to-end, including problem definition, architecture planning, implementation, testing, and delivery.
  • Ability to write clear technical proposals and Requests for Comments (RFCs), and drive engineering alignment across teams through written design documents and verbal discussions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), reliability engineering, or incident management at a large-scale technology company.
  • Experience in platform or infrastructure engineering, including disciplines such as compute platforms, software networking, online storage, developer platforms, or observability.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical projects or teams while remaining hands-on with software engineering and technical implementation.
