Principal Consultant - Application Development

• WSP Digital Solutions is a fast moving, innovation focused team helping our environmental and engineering clients adopt modern digital capabilities.
• We are looking for a Principal Developer who can build modern cloud‑native applications, integrate APIs, and contribute to high‑quality product development in an agile environment.
• This role blends hands-on development, modern cloud tooling, and collaboration with architects, data engineers, and product teams.
• Serve as a senior tech lead, guiding team members on architecture, technology selection, engineering best practices, and delivery strategy.
• Design, develop, and maintain scalable cloud-native applications using modern technologies such as .NET Core/C#, Node.js (TypeScript/JavaScript), Python, Angular, and React.
• Define and implement solution architectures leveraging microservices, event-driven patterns, containerization, and cloud-native services.
• Build and maintain secure, scalable APIs, backend services, system integrations, and frontend applications across digital platforms.
• Create prototypes, proof-of-concepts (POCs), technical presentations, architectural diagrams, and engineering documentation to validate and communicate solution approaches.
• Drive modernization initiatives, including product enhancements, platform upgrades, technical debt reduction, and migration to modern architectures.
• Collaborate with data engineers, analysts, and AI/ML teams to operationalize data pipelines, intelligent workflows, and machine learning solutions.
• Contribute to Agile product development through sprint planning, backlog refinement, estimation, Scrum ceremonies, and incremental delivery.
• Establish and promote engineering excellence through code reviews, testing strategies, quality assurance practices, security reviews, and CI/CD automation.
• Work closely with Product Owners, Business Analysts, Architects, and Delivery Managers to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Evaluate emerging technologies, frameworks, and cloud services, providing recommendations that improve scalability, maintainability, developer productivity, and business value.
• Mentor engineers and foster adoption of modern software engineering practices, DevOps culture, and continuous improvement across teams.

Skills / Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• 8-12 years of experience designing, building, and delivering scalable enterprise and cloud-native applications.
• Strong hands-on experience with modern backend technologies such as .NET Core/C#, Node.js (TypeScript/JavaScript), Python, or similar frameworks.
• Experience building modern web applications using frameworks such as Angular, React, or equivalent frontend technologies.
• Strong understanding of API-first design, microservices architecture, event-driven systems, and distributed applications.
• Experience developing and deploying solutions on cloud platforms, preferably Microsoft Azure, including modern cloud services and serverless architectures.
• Proficiency with source control, DevOps, and CI/CD practices using tools such as Git, Azure DevOps, GitHub, and automated deployment pipelines.
• Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Ability to evaluate and adopt modern technologies, frameworks, and engineering practices to build secure, maintainable, and scalable solutions.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience integrating ML/AI components into applications.
• Familiarity with data engineering workflows.
• Experience working in environmental, infrastructure, or engineering domains.
