Zillow Real Estate

Data Science Intern

Seattle, WA In person Internship

Location: Seattle-WA-2nd Ave

About the team

Zillow's Data Science and Analytics organization turns complex data into insights that inform decisions across the company. As an intern, you'll join the team and explore how data can help us understand customer behavior, measure outcomes, and find ways to improve the customer experience. You'll work with data scientists and cross-functional partners, building your analytical skills while bringing a fresh perspective to real business questions.

Interns may focus on areas such as

  • Business: build reporting, models, and insights that help specific Zillow organizations assess current initiatives and find opportunities to innovate.
  • Marketing: develop experimentation-first strategies for consumer and business marketing, and measure how each channel performs.
  • Product: analyze how people use our web and app products so we can deliver a better experience for everything home.
  • Pricing: help develop pricing strategies that deliver strong value for customers such as Premier Agents, lenders, and landlords.
  • Tools: turn the large volume of data Zillow collects every day into data products that help partners make informed decisions.

About the role

At Zillow, interns do meaningful work that contributes to the business from day one. As a Data Science Intern, you’ll apply the quantitative and programming skills you’re building in school to a scoped, real-world project. With guidance from your manager and team, you’ll work through the analytical process—from defining a question and preparing data to interpreting results and sharing recommendations.

During your internship, you will have opportunities to

Partner with your manager and stakeholders to turn an open-ended business question into an analytical plan with clear goals and deliverables.

Use SQL and Python/R to explore, prepare, and validate data, documenting assumptions and flagging data-quality issues.

Analyze patterns in customer behavior or business performance to uncover insights and potential opportunities.

Apply statistical methods, such as regression, hypothesis testing, or experiment analysis (including A/B tests and pilots), as fits your project.

Help define and interpret metrics that connect your analysis to customer and business outcomes, and support ongoing performance tracking.

Create clear visualizations and reproducible analyses that make your findings useful to others.

Work with engineers, product managers, marketers, and other teammates to build a shared approach to analyzing and communicating insights.

Communicate your approach, results, recommendations, and limitations to technical and nontechnical audiences.

Document your work and deliver a final presentation and handoff so the team can build on your findings.

This role has been categorized as an Office position. “Office” employees regularly work at an existing ZG corporate office for approximately 80 to 100 percent of their time each month. Employees must live within reasonable commuting distance of their designated ZG office. ZG has not defined a reasonable distance, and expects employees will use judgment in determining this for themselves and understand the implications re: time commitment and cost of daily commute.

In California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $104,000.00 - $166,000.00 annually. This base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations.

Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location.

Who you are

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Finance, or a related quantitative field. You’re targeting a graduation date before December 2028.
  • Have a foundation in probability, statistics, and data analysis through coursework, research, or projects.
  • Can use Python or R, or a similar programming language, to manipulate data and perform analysis.
  • Have familiarity with SQL and relational data, or a demonstrated ability and willingness to learn.
  • Enjoy asking questions, investigating patterns, and bringing structure to ambiguous problems.
  • Approach analysis thoughtfully: you check assumptions, validate results, and distinguish what the data supports from what remains uncertain.
  • Can explain your thinking clearly and collaborate with people who bring different technical and non-technical backgrounds.
  • Are curious about using AI tools to support your work while maintaining independent judgment, validating outputs, and following data-handling guidelines.
  • Experience from coursework, academic research, student organizations, and personal projects is welcome. Prior professional data science experience is not required.

Helpful, but not required

Exposure to A/B testing, experimental design, or causal inference.

Experience with data visualization tools or libraries.

Familiarity with regression, predictive modeling, or other statistical learning methods.

Experience organizing reproducible work using notebooks, version control, or clear technical documentation.
