Interview Questions: Practice by Role

Practice the most common interview questions for your target role. Select a role below to see behavioral and technical interview questions that companies actually ask, then shuffle to get a fresh set each time you practice.

Behavioral Questions

These questions evaluate your soft skills, teamwork, and problem-solving approach. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers.

1

Tell me about a time you had to deal with a difficult coworker or stakeholder.

2

3

Tell me about a time you missed a deadline or failed to deliver. What happened and what did you learn?

4

Describe a situation where you had to make a decision with incomplete information.

5

Tell me about a time you went above and beyond what was expected.

6

How do you handle receiving critical feedback?

7

Describe a time you had to influence someone without direct authority.

8

Tell me about your most technically challenging project. What made it difficult?

9

Describe a time when you had to balance multiple priorities. How did you decide what to focus on?

10

Tell me about a time you identified a problem before anyone else noticed it.

Technical Questions for Software Engineers

These questions test your technical depth and problem-solving skills specific to software engineer roles.

1

Design a URL shortening service. How would you handle billions of URLs?

2

How would you design a real-time chat application that supports millions of users?

3

Explain the difference between SQL and NoSQL databases. When would you choose one over the other?

4

How would you optimize a slow database query? Walk me through your debugging process.

5

Design an API rate limiter. What data structures would you use?

6

Explain how garbage collection works in your preferred language.

7

How would you design a distributed cache like Redis?

8

What is the CAP theorem and how does it affect system design decisions?

How to Use These Interview Questions

The best way to prepare for an interview is to practice answering questions out loud, not just reading them. Pick 3-5 questions from each category, set a timer for 2 minutes per answer, and record yourself. Reviewing the recording reveals filler words, rambling, and missed details that you would not notice otherwise.

For behavioral interview questions, structure your answers using the STAR method: describe the Situation, the Task you were responsible for, the Action you took, and the Result you achieved. Interviewers are looking for specific examples, not hypotheticals. Quantify results whenever possible ("reduced build time by 40%," not "improved performance significantly").

For technical interview questions, think out loud. Interviewers care as much about your reasoning process as the final answer. Start by clarifying the problem, discuss trade-offs between approaches, and be upfront about what you do not know. The questions above cover the topics most frequently asked at companies hiring for software engineer roles.

Use the shuffle button to get a fresh set of interview questions each time you practice. Repetition with variation builds the confidence to handle unexpected questions during the real interview.
