Summary

The Federal Reserve Board (Board) provides students opportunities for career success. The Board’s Internship program is designed to provide valuable work experience for undergraduate and graduate students considering careers including, but not limited to, economics, finance and accounting, information systems, and data analysis. The Board believes that by combining academic endeavors with project-related work experience, qualified and capable college students can gain the practical knowledge need in a competitive global job market.

Internships are paid positions with salaries commensurate with credit hours; internships may be in-person, remote or hybrid, depending on the needs of the team. Employment in the Board’s internship program is granted to U.S. citizens. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited university and returning to continue studies after the internship. Interns receive a syllabus or research project plan outlining their projects and goals for the internship.

Interns are assigned a supervisor or mentor to guide them through their internship, and regular check-in meetings with their manager to manage performance expectations and assist with learning goals. Interns have access to a wide range of training programs and events for professional development purposes.

Security Analyst interns support teams across the Security area in work such as:

Developing scripts and filters that automate log monitoring and alerting

Evaluating tools that monitor security systems, control access, and detect and report security violations

Assisting with information security assessment reviews

Helping maintain compliance, governance, policies, and standards

Helping create security awareness and training content

Recent interns have contributed to projects including

Vulnerability scanning and analysis

Optimizing Splunk web lists

Identifying replacement options for existing web security scanning tools

Applying risk assessment tools

Workforce development activities

Through this work you will gain hands-on experience with security access control systems and compliance governance, and you will have a chance to find out whether a career in information security or security compliance is right for you.

About the Division and Section/Team: The Security area is made up of three teams. Together they detect and respond to threats, set and enforce the Board's security rules, and build the tools that make it all work. Depending on your interests and project needs, you may work with one or more of them.

Cyber Operations (Cyber Ops) Team

Finds and stops threats.

Cyber Ops is the Board's front line of defense. The team monitors network and system activity, blocks malicious traffic, tracks what attackers are doing in the wider world, and proactively hunts for signs of intrusion that automated tools might miss. If a system is compromised, Cyber Ops leads the response to contain the problem and restore normal operations. The team also keeps an eye on risks from insiders and third-party vendors and analyzes new vulnerabilities to decide how best to defend against them.

Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC)

Sets the rules and makes sure the Board follows them.

GRC turns federal security and privacy requirements into practical Board policy and then measures how well the Board is meeting them. The team runs FISMA control assessments using NIST frameworks, coordinates security audits, writes the policies and standards that apply to every system and employee, and delivers the training and outreach that helps staff understand their security responsibilities. GRC also oversees the Board's day-to-day compliance with federal privacy laws.

Security Engineering (SE)

Builds and runs the security technology.

Security Engineering provides the tools that Cyber Ops and GRC depend on. The team evaluates and selects new security products, integrates them across the Board's environment, and keeps them patched, tuned, and reliable. SE also manages identity and access, making sure the right people can reach the right resources at the right time. The Board currently leverages tools and technologies that provide Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR), Identity and Access Management (IAM), and Vulnerability Management, along with other solutions.

About the Role: Our mission matters. The Federal Reserve Board promotes a strong economy for the American people by fostering the stability, integrity, and efficiency of the nation's monetary, financial, and payment systems. As an intern, you will contribute directly to that mission by helping to keep the Board's systems and data secure.

As a Security Analyst intern, you will join the Information Security & Privacy Branch of the Information Technology Division, where teams work every day to protect the Board's data and information assets. You will support the people who defend the Board's networks, govern its security and privacy compliance, and build and run the technology that makes both possible.

You will work side by side with experienced analysts and engineers, contribute to real projects, and see first-hand how a federal cybersecurity program operates.
