Internship Report 2026: It's Not Too Late to Find an Internship
Scoutify's internship report 2026: 14,808 summer internship postings across 3,969 companies. March was the biggest month yet, and 96% were still open in April.
It is not too late to find a summer internship in the spring. In Scoutify's internship report 2026, March was the biggest month for new summer internship postings we have ever recorded: 6,241 new postings, almost as many as January and February combined (6,700). From December 2025 to March 2026 we tracked 14,808 summer internship postings at 3,969 companies, and 96% of them were still open when we checked on April 4, 2026.
When I wrote this report in April, every other post on r/csMajorswas some version of the same question: "is it too late to get a summer internship?" Students who struck out in the fall recruiting cycle were watching April arrive and assuming the window had closed.
So I went and looked at our data. Scoutify monitors 70,000+ company career pages in real time, and when I filtered for summer internships specifically, March turned out to be the biggest month we have ever recorded.
This report covers the summer 2026 cycle, and the numbers below are exactly as we published them. If you are reading it in the fall of 2026, the next cycle is already open: our guide to summer 2027 internships tracks which programs have posted, and our SWE internship alerts guide explains how to apply to software roles the day they go live. The main lesson of this report carries over to 2027, which is that the internship season runs much later than most students think.
March 2026 was the biggest month for summer internship postings
January and February combined accounted for 6,700 internship postings. March alone had 6,241.
The conventional wisdom is that internship recruiting peaks in the fall. Our data tells a different story. The biggest surge came in late February and continued through all of March, with multiple weeks above 1,400 postings. Even the last week of March (1,066) was higher than most of January.
This includes companies you have heard of. Amazon posted 25 new internships in March, Microsoft posted 21 and Meta posted 16. These were not leftovers, because many of these roles did not exist on their career pages in February.
Red Bull is the clearest example in the table: it went from 21 new internships in February to 114 in March. Ingram Micro posted no internships at all from December to February and then posted 33 in March. A student who stopped checking career pages after the fall would have missed every one of those roles. For a company-by-company list from the same season, with pay and application status, see our top summer 2026 internships.
Internships are not only a software engineering story
One thing that surprised me is that this is not a software engineering story. If you are a business major, a finance major or a marketing student, the numbers are nearly as strong. Corporate finance internships (1,246 active) are within striking distance of SWE (2,044), and machine learning and data analytics are well represented too.
The common advice on Reddit is "if you're not in SWE, there's nothing out there." The data says otherwise. Marketing alone has 1,338 open internships, and business analyst roles have 1,226. Even niche fields like electrical and hardware engineering have over 500.
Is it too late to get a summer internship in April?
If you are reading this in April and still do not have an internship, the data is clear: companies are still hiring. The March surge was real, and the vast majority of those roles are still accepting applications. The cycle is later than Reddit thinks it is.
A later season is not the same thing as a slower one, though. Internship teams usually review applications on a rolling basis, so a role that posts in March still fills from the front of the pile, and the students who apply in the first day or two are the ones a recruiter reads first. The spring wave gives you a real second chance, but only if you see the postings while they are new.
What the 2026 data means for summer 2027 internships
I read the 2026 numbers as two waves rather than one. The fall wave is real for the most competitive programs: as our guide to SWE internship alerts explains, most large tech companies open their main software internships between August and October, and quantitative trading firms often post even earlier. The second wave is the one this report measured, and it ran from late February to the end of March.
For summer 2027, I would plan for both. Apply to the fall programs as they open, and then keep watching career pages from January to April, because that is when many companies outside big tech, and many non-engineering teams, post their roles. Our summer 2027 internships tracker follows the current cycle as it happens, the FAANG internship alerts guide covers when the biggest tech programs post, and our guide to job alerts for new grads explains how students who graduate next year can catch new grad roles as they post.
How to apply to internships before the window closes
Here is what I would do: pick 10 companies from the table above, go to their career pages directly, and apply this week. Do not wait for LinkedIn to surface them. Career pages update in real time, while job boards lag by hours or days, and that gap is where the first-mover advantage lives.
If you want to skip the manual checking, Scoutify monitors 70,000+ career pages and sends you a push notification the moment a new internship is posted. It is how I found my Cloudflare internship. Alerts were free when I published this report in April, and today they cost $5 a week.
That Cloudflare posting went up in October 2025, during the fall wave, when Scoutify was still tiny and we were mostly testing alerts on ourselves. I was notified minutes after the role went live, applied immediately, and got the interview, and that application led to a product manager internship at Cloudflare and then to a full-time offer. Because it was a fall posting, my own result does not prove the spring point on its own, but it shows the mechanism this report depends on: I saw the role while it was new, I applied right away, and I got an interview.
Scoutify is AI job search that applies for you first. Alerts tell you that a new internship exists, and Sniper goes one step further: it applies to new internships that fit your role, location, salary floor and visa needs directly on company career sites, minutes after they post, including while you sleep. If you would rather not refresh career pages at all, Sniper can auto-apply the day a posting opensat employers whose career sites run on Workday, Greenhouse and SmartRecruiters, and it is rolling out on Ashby and Lever. Sniper never uses your LinkedIn account and never applies on linkedin.com, and most employers' confirmation emails land in Scoutify Mail, so you can see that each application arrived.
Sniper costs $25 a week for up to 500 applications, Auto Apply costs $15 a week for up to 200, and alerts cost $5 a week. Your first 25 applications are free, so you can try Sniper on the next batch of internships before you pay anything.
Sniper is the better choice when you want to apply early to a large number of internships with standard application forms, which describes most of the postings in this report. It is not the right tool for a program that asks for essays, a portfolio or a written answer about a specific team; for those, I would use an alert and write the application myself. If you are comparing options, our ranking of the best auto-apply tools and our answer to whether auto-apply works cover the trade-offs, and our guide to how many jobs to apply to per day covers how much volume is enough.
Frequently asked questions
Is it too late to apply for summer internships in April?
It is not too late. In Scoutify's internship report 2026, March 2026 had 6,241 new summer internship postings, the most of any month we tracked, and 96% of the postings we tracked were still open on April 4, 2026.
When do most summer internships get posted?
Most large tech companies open their main software internships between August and October, and quantitative trading firms often post earlier. Scoutify's 2026 data also shows a second wave in late February and March, when weekly internship postings stayed above 1,000 and peaked at 1,712 in the week of February 23.
Are there internships for students who are not computer science majors?
There are many. As of April 2026, Scoutify counted 1,338 open marketing internships, 1,246 corporate finance internships and 1,226 business analyst internships, compared with 2,044 in software engineering.
How can I find internships as soon as they are posted?
Check company career pages directly instead of waiting for job boards, because career pages update in real time and boards can lag by hours or days. Scoutify watches 70,000+ company career pages and sends a push notification when a matching internship is posted, for $5 a week.
Can I auto apply to internships?
You can auto apply to internships at employers whose career sites the tool supports. Scoutify's Sniper applies to new matching internships on company career sites that run on Workday, Greenhouse and SmartRecruiters, it is rolling out on Ashby and Lever, and your first 25 applications are free. Programs that require essays or a portfolio are still better done by hand.

How we counted.Scoutify monitors career pages at 70,000+ companies via ATS APIs (Greenhouse, Workday, Lever, SmartRecruiters, Ashby, and others) and spots new postings within minutes. Of these, 3,969 had at least one internship posting during our tracking period. An "internship" is any posting with the word "intern" or "internship" in the title. We excluded titles containing "internal" or "international" and filtered out postings mentioning fall, spring, or winter terms. We manually sampled 200+ titles to verify quality, and virtually all matches are genuine student internship positions (for example, "Software Engineer Intern - Summer 2026," not "Internal Coordinator"). "Still active" means confirmed present on the company's career page as of April 4, 2026. Our data skews toward larger companies with formal ATS platforms. Startups that only post on LinkedIn are not represented. This is our first year tracking this data; year-over-year comparisons will be available starting in 2027.
