This list covers the summer 2026 recruiting cycle, which has ended. If you are applying now, our Summer 2027 internships guide covers the programs that are open this season, and the 2026 internship report explains the data behind the numbers on this page.

The top summer 2026 internships were at Google, Meta, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft in big tech, and at Stripe, Databricks, Figma, Ramp and Scale AI among high-growth companies, where software engineering interns earned roughly $8,800 to $10,500 a month. Scoutify tracked 14,808 summer 2026 internship postings across 3,969 companies, and 96% of them were still open on their company's career page in early April, so the window was far from closed for students who had nothing lined up after the fall. This page lists those programs with pay, timelines and what each company looks for, and it explains how to apply the day a posting opens.

Updated September 30, 2026

When this list was first published at the end of March 2026, summer 2026 internship recruiting was already in full swing. If you were reading it in March or April, you were not early, but you were on time. Many FAANG and unicorn companies had opened applications in the fall of 2025, and some had already extended offers. The good news was that companies kept posting new internship openings on a rolling basis throughout the spring, because new headcount got approved, teams expanded their intern classes and offers fell through, so the window was still open.

Our data showed how much was still coming. January and February combined produced 6,700 internship postings, and March alone produced 6,241. Amazon posted 25 new internships that March, Microsoft posted 21 and Meta posted 16, and many of those roles did not exist on their career pages in February. The 2026 internship report explains how we counted.

This guide lists the most competitive summer 2026 internships, organized by company tier, along with application deadlines (where they were published), compensation data and practical advice for standing out. During the 2026 season, we updated this list weekly as new postings appeared.

FAANG and big tech internships

These programs are the most competitive, with acceptance rates often below 5%. They also pay the most and carry the most weight on a resume.

Google: Software Engineering Intern

Google paid software engineering interns about $10,500 a month in Mountain View, with relocation assistance and a housing stipend. The internship runs 12 to 14 weeks, from May to August or from June to September. Applications opened in September 2025 and stayed on rolling admissions until slots were filled, so check Google Careers for current availability. Google evaluates coding skills (LeetCode medium to hard problems), prior projects and your ability to describe impact. A strong GitHub portfolio and prior internship experience help, but neither is required.

Meta: Software Engineering Intern

Meta paid about $10,000 a month in Menlo Park, plus a housing stipend and relocation, for a 12-week internship. Applications opened in October 2025 and stayed open on a rolling basis until they were filled. Meta's intern program places you on a production team from day one. The interview is two coding rounds of 45 minutes each, focused on data structures and algorithms, and interns do not get a system design round.

Apple: various engineering intern roles

Apple paid about $9,500 a month, plus relocation and housing assistance, for a 12-week internship. Apple posts intern roles on a rolling basis and sporadically, sometimes with very short application windows, which is why real-time alerts are especially useful for Apple. Apple also values domain-specific knowledge more than the other FAANG companies do: if you are applying for an ML role, it wants to see ML projects, and if the role is in iOS, it wants to see Swift experience.

Amazon: SDE Intern

Amazon paid SDE interns about $9,200 a month in Seattle, plus relocation, for 12 weeks. Its applications opened in August 2025, which was one of the earliest openings in big tech, and some organizations still had summer 2026 openings in the spring. Amazon's Leadership Principles dominate the interview, so expect behavioral questions alongside coding; "Tell me about a time you disagreed with a teammate" is almost guaranteed.

Microsoft: Software Engineering Intern

Microsoft paid about $8,800 a month in Redmond, plus a housing stipend, for 12 weeks. Applications opened in September 2025, and some teams were still hiring in spring 2026. Microsoft's Explore program targets freshmen and sophomores, while the standard SWE intern program targets juniors, and its interview process is generally considered more approachable than Google's or Meta's.

High-growth unicorn internships

These companies offer smaller intern classes, more ownership and an experience close to a startup's, with competitive pay.

Stripe: Software Engineering Intern

Stripe paid about $10,000 a month, plus a housing stipend. Its intern program is known for giving interns real, impactful projects, and past interns have shipped features used by thousands of merchants. The program is highly competitive, and strong systems knowledge is valued.

Databricks: Software Engineering Intern

Databricks paid about $10,000 a month. Its interviews test both coding and system design thinking, even at the intern level, so familiarity with distributed systems or data engineering concepts is a plus.

Figma: Product Design and Engineering Intern

Figma paid about $9,500 a month. Its design-forward culture means the engineering intern program values product thinking alongside technical skills, so if you can explain why you would build something a certain way, and not only how, you fit the mold.

Ramp: Software Engineering Intern

Ramp paid about $9,000 a month. Ramp is growing fast and gives interns significant autonomy, and its interview process is practical: expect a take-home project or a pair programming session rather than pure algorithm questions.

Scale AI: Engineering Intern

Scale AI paid about $9,500 a month. Because Scale AI works on AI infrastructure and data labeling, interns often work on problems close to machine learning, so strong Python skills and familiarity with ML concepts help.

Tips for standing out in internship applications

Internship hiring is a volume game on both sides: companies receive thousands of applications, and students apply to dozens of companies. Here is how to set yourself apart.

Apply early. This is the single highest-leverage thing you can do. Internship slots fill fast, and many companies review applications on a rolling basis, so a qualified application submitted in October has better odds than the same application submitted in February. For companies that post new internship openings throughout the spring, set up instant internship alerts from company career pages so you see each posting within minutes. Scoutify is how I found my own Cloudflare internship.

Build projects that demonstrate impact as well as skill. Every CS student has built a to-do app, but very few can describe a project where they solved a real problem for real users. Open-source contributions, hackathon projects with actual users and personal tools that you use daily stand out more than generic portfolio projects.

Tailor your resume for each company. Your resume for Google should emphasize different skills than your resume for a design-forward company like Figma, so keep a base resume and maintain 2 or 3 variants. See our resume guide for specifics.

Practice deliberately, not just extensively. 200 LeetCode problems done mindlessly are less valuable than 80 problems done with deliberate review: understanding time complexity, identifying patterns and re-solving the problems you got wrong. Focus on the patterns (two pointers, sliding window, BFS and DFS, dynamic programming) rather than memorizing solutions, and read each company's interview page, such as the one for Google interview questions, before your first round.

Use your network. Referrals move your application to the front of the queue at many companies. If you know someone at a target company, even a current or former intern, ask for a referral. If you do not have connections yet, join university tech communities, attend virtual recruiting events and engage with company engineers on LinkedIn.

Applying the day a posting opens

Alerts solve the finding problem, but an internship that posts during a lecture, an exam or the middle of the night can collect hundreds of applicants before you get to it. Sniper, Scoutify's AI auto-apply, handles the next step. You set the job type to internship and choose your roles, locations and visa needs, and Sniper applies to new internship postings that match on the company's own career site, through Workday, Greenhouse and SmartRecruiters today, with Ashby and Lever rolling out.

Sniper submits around the clock, so it applies while you sleep, it never uses your LinkedIn account, and most employer confirmation emails land in Scoutify Mail, so you can see that each application went through. It costs $25 a week for up to 500 applications, and your first 25 applications are free, with no card. You can auto-apply the day a posting opens, and if you want to compare it with other tools first, read our roundup of the best auto-apply tools.

Deadlines and rolling admissions

Most top tech companies use rolling admissions for internships, which means they review applications as they come in and fill spots continuously. There is often no hard deadline, and once all spots are filled, the posting is removed, which makes applying early critical.

Some companies do have structured timelines:

  • Google: Applications typically open in September, first-round interviews begin in October, and offers start going out in November and December.
  • Amazon: Amazon is among the earliest, and applications can open as early as August. Amazon often has the largest intern class (thousands of positions), so its window stays open longer.
  • Jane Street, Citadel and Two Sigma (finance and quant): Applications open in August and September with very fast timelines, and offers often go out before December.
  • Mid-size startups: Their timelines are more variable. Many open applications between January and March for summer positions, especially if they are growing and have just received budget approval.

What if you were late?

If it was March or April 2026 and you had not applied anywhere yet, you were behind but not out, and the same is true at that point in any cycle. Here is the action plan:

  • Focus on mid-size companies and startups that are still actively posting, because they often have later timelines and less competition than FAANG.
  • Set up real-time alerts for internship postings. New intern roles appear throughout the spring as companies finalize budgets and expand headcount, and being the first to apply to a newly posted role gives you an edge.
  • Consider off-cycle internships in the fall or winter. Some companies, especially those with year-round programs (for example Amazon, Microsoft and IBM), hire interns outside the summer window.
  • Look at research labs, nonprofits and open-source programs like Google Summer of Code if traditional internship slots are filled.

Looking ahead to summer 2027

Summer 2027 recruiting is open now. If the 2026 pattern holds, the big tech programs open in late summer and fall, and mid-size companies keep posting through the spring, which means the students who apply in the first days after each posting will again have the advantage. Our Summer 2027 internships guide covers this season, and the FAANG internships 2027 guide shows when each big tech program usually opens. For the data behind this page, including which industries and months had the most postings, read the 2026 internship report. If you are graduating instead, see our guide to job alerts for new grads.

The bottom line

The best summer internships in 2026 combined strong compensation, meaningful project work and resume value that opens doors for full-time recruiting. The competition is real, but the playing field is not level: students who apply early, prepare deliberately and use every available tool to find openings have a structural advantage. Scoutify monitors 70,000+ company career pages, sends push notifications within minutes of a new intern role, and can have Sniper apply for you on the company's career site.

Common questions

When should I apply for summer 2026 internships?

Many top companies opened applications between August and October 2025. Amazon often opens as early as August, and Google and Meta typically open in September and October. Mid-size companies and startups open later, often between January and March. The earlier you apply, the better your chances, since most companies review on a rolling basis and fill spots continuously.

How much do FAANG internships pay?

FAANG software engineering internships pay approximately $8,800 to $10,500 per month, plus housing stipends and relocation assistance. Google and Meta are typically at the top ($10,000 to $10,500 a month), while Microsoft and Amazon are slightly lower ($8,800 to $9,200 a month). Unicorn startups like Stripe and Databricks pay competitively, at around $9,500 to $10,000 a month.

Is it too late to apply for summer 2026 internships in March?

In March you are behind the FAANG timeline, but you are not out. Mid-size companies and startups often hire through March and April, and new intern roles appear throughout the spring as companies finalize budgets. Set up real-time alerts for internship postings, focus on companies that are still actively posting, and consider off-cycle internships in the fall or winter.

What is the most important thing for getting a top internship?

Applying early is the single highest-leverage action. Beyond that, strong algorithmic interview performance (practicing LeetCode patterns rather than volume), projects that demonstrate real impact, and referrals from current employees or interns all significantly improve your odds.

When do summer 2027 internship applications open?

If companies follow the 2026 calendar, Amazon opens as early as August 2026, Google and Meta open in September and October 2026, and mid-size companies and startups open between January and March 2027. Most programs review applications on a rolling basis, so applying in the first days after a posting goes live matters more than any deadline.
